Bro. Greg Floyd Selected as UA Engineering Fellow

For the month of April 2023, TDAA is spotlighting and congratulating Bro. Jonathan Gregary Floyd for being selected as a University of Alabama Distinguished Engineering Fellow.

Recognition as a Distinguished Fellow is the highest commendation given to graduates and others who have strengthened the reputation of the College of Engineering through their efforts. Since 1988, the College has recognized more than 340 individuals as Distinguished Engineering Fellows.

Bro. Floyd will be the 2nd Theta Delta Alumnus to be selected as UA Distinguished Engineering Fellow. He joins Bro. Terry R. Woods (Spr. ‘77) who was selected in 2003.

Lt Col Floyd was born and raised in Evergreen, Alabama to Houston and Alberta Floyd, two educators in the Conecuh County School System (yes the home of Conecuh Sausage, the OFFICIAL sausage of the Crimson Tide). Lt Col Floyd graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology and was later Commissioned a 2nd Leutenant in the United States Air Force’s Civil Engineering Career

Field. Lt Col Floyd also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Natonal University. He is a graduate of the United States Air Force’s Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College.

His 28 years of service as both an Active Duty and Reserves Officer included Leadership positions at Headquarters Air Force, Numbered Air Force, Division and Squadron Levels. As Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Chief of Emergency Services Branch at Headquarters United States Air Force, Pentagon, Lt Col Floyd oversaw all Policies and funding required to train and equip 60,000 Engineers deployed worldwide. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his leadership of a 100 person Joint Program Management Team deployed by the Army Corp of Engineers to Central Iraq in 2009/2010. Lt Col Floyd was also awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, and selected the Company Grade Officer of the Year during his assignment to San Vito Air Base in southern Italy.

While Serving in the Reserves and upon his retirement from the United States Air Force, Greg worked for nine years in the Aerospace/Defense Industry for LEAR Astronics Corp. and Raytheon Corp. He also spent 15 years in the Public Education Sector with the Long Beach Community College District and the Los Angeles Community College District.

Greg continues to volunteer and serve particularly at the University of Alabama. He has served on the Capstone Engineering Society Board of Directors for 10 years mentoring and raising scholarship funds for the undergraduate engineering students. He is also a founding Member of the Theta Delta Alumni Foundation. A 501©3 organization formed specifically to give back to the Capstone. Since it’s inception this group has provided scholarships and awards to UA’s BRIDGE Program, the Afro American Gospel Choir and a leadership award given to an undergraduate member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

Greg is married to Lori A. Floyd and has three children (Antaya Ballard, Jace Floyd and Lorin Floyd)..
